Shower Doors 101

Many people do not give much thought to their shower doors until they need to go out and purchase a new shower.  The most common shower covering is, of course, a shower curtain. Curtains are great because they are cheap and easy to replace. The point of a shower covering, however, is that it keeps the water inside the shower and not all over the bathroom floor. As wonderful as shower curtains are in theory, they simply are not as useful as shower doors. Doors do a much better job at keeping your bathroom floor dry. Here is a simple guide to the different types of shower doors you can buy.

Sliding door showers: Sliding doors, also known as bypass doors, are the most common. They come in two or three sections, depending on the size of your bathtub/shower combination, and run along a track that is on the top and the bottom. These doors are the most popular because they take up the least amount of space, are easy to care for, and are attractive. Because they require a space that is at least twice the width of one door, they are most commonly used with a bathtub. The downside of sliding door showers, however, is that the tracks can be difficult to clean and the rollers can wear down over time and need to be replaced.

Bi fold/ Curved Doors: These doors are great when you have a small opening and a small bathroom. When you open them, they fold up like an accordion. These doors, however, can be twisted in strange ways and, like the sliding door showers, the track is difficult to clean. A curved door allows for left or right access and does not open up into the bathroom giving you more room.

Swinging Doors: These shower doors are best only in large bathrooms and for wide openings. They add elegance and grandeur but you need to make sure that theses doors do not hit the sink or the toilet when they open because that can damage both items over time.

I hope this quick overview helps when you embark into the world of showers. Good luck finding the one you need!
